Citizens Police Academy

The Effingham Police Department conducts Citizens Police Academies throughout the year in order to provide those interested with insight into the operations and philosophy of the Department.

Overview of the Academy

  • 7-week program over a 3-hour block each week
  • In-depth review of departmental capabilities and procedures
  • Hands-on exposure to real police equipment
  • On-shift ride-along for a first-person look at real police activity

Requirements

Applicants:

  • Will complete an application and undergo a basic background check
  • Must be 18 years old and live or work in or around the Effingham area
  • Should not have pending criminal litigation or previous felony drug or violent convictions
  • Shall complete a hold harmless agreement and adhere to all safety procedures as instructed
  • Must attend 5 of the 7 academy blocks to be considered for successful completion
  • Should complete 1 ride-along with a Field Training Officer during their Academy period

Warnings

  • This course may contain periods of instruction with material of a sensitive nature
  • Some blocks of instruction may expose participants to loud noises and/or lead exposure
