Paid-On-Call Firefighter (part-time)

The City of Effingham Fire Department is seeking candidates to serve as a Paid-On-Call Firefighter. This position is part-time, with a starting wage of $19.32 per hour. Increases to $19.82 after six (6) months of service. Fringe benefits are not offered with this position, with the exception of paid leave.

Duties:
• Performs rescue, fire suppression, fire prevention and education, and mitigation of hazardous materials activities;
• Operation and maintenance of fire and emergency equipment, apparatus, and stations;
• Performs hazardous tasks and skilled procedures under emergency conditions, which may involve strenuous exertion under adverse conditions such as fire, heat, smoke darkness,
and cramped surroundings;
• Knowledge of Standard Operating Guidelines, policies, and procedures pertaining to fire ground high-rise, hazardous materials, and specialized rescue operations;
• Conducts and/or attends continuing education programs of training and instruction;
• Develops and maintains required skills and certifications/licenses
• Assists in public fire education and public relations activities;
• Other duties as assigned.

General Qualifications:
• Possess a valid driver’s license;
• Residency within 10 miles of Effingham corporate limits;
• Fulfill the physical requirements of the position as defined in the job description and as required by State of Illinois training standards.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
• High school education or equivalent; three to six months of related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Education and Experience Requirements:
• High school education or equivalent; six to twelve months of related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
