What is the purpose of FOIA?

FOIA is a state statute that provides the public the right to access government documents and records. The purpose behind FOIA is to provide transparency as the public has a right to know what the government is doing. FOIA statute states that any person can ask a public body can request a copy of its records on a specific topic and the records must be provided, unless there is an exemption in the statute that protects those records from disclosure.
